Today is April 20th (4/20) and HAPPY 420 is One of Today's Twitter Trends, Most Know Why but Who Coined the Term?

The term 420 is international code for marijuana and its many aka's (weed, pot, maryjane, dro, herb, etc., etc.). On this April 20th, it has been trending all day on Twitter. It's interesting that three seemingly random #'s so powerfully represent the herb in any capacity ("Got 420?", "Want 420?", and even simply, "420?") worldwide and we wondered from where the term originated.

We came across the best answer on Huffingtonpost.com in an article, "420 Meaning: The True Story of how April 20th became 'Weed Day'". The article is lengthy but filled with maybe's and could be's about from where 420 emerged. After debunking 420 as police code for "marijuana smoking in progress" the article finally discloses that the term 420 was most likely coined in the early 1970's by a group of San Rafael, CA high school friends who called themselves The Waldos. Apparently these chronic smokers were in search of a mythical marijuana patch and designated 4:20 PM as the time they would meet up to go look for it. They would slyly use the time 4:20 to communicate to one another about their on-going scavenger hunt so that parents, teachers, and would-be snitches wouldn't be the wiser. Weeks and weeks went by and the patch was never found, however, the term 420 was born.

But that's not the end of it. Of course, a group of kids in Northern Cali could not have possibly spread the term 420 worldwide without help. See, The Waldo's were somehow linked to the band The Grateful Dead (read the article for details) and once they got hold of the term 420 it was a wrap. It became an underground term for The Dead's legions of fans and today, decades later, 420 is an international rockstar.

So there you have it! And, now all of you celebrating 420 today at least know why you're doing it. We think. You see, know one can confirm anything concretely because none of the ex-stoners can really remember. Anyhoo, happy to help!

Twitter Dirt: Do We Smell a Twitter War Between Eva Marcille & Lance Gross?

Sooo, our previous post questioned whether or not Eva's tweets were directed toward ex-flame Lance Gross, or another brotha. Well, since then there have been more curious tweets. For example, "@EvaMarcille exactly so now I tell them I'm not looking for a project because I used all my glue on the last dude... LOL" Hmmm sounds like a lil' mud slingin' to us but who are we??? She later confirms that she and Lance are "all love" and their tweets are not directed toward each other. This was an interesting response since she clearly said that her "last dude" was a project and she ran out of glue trying to fix him. We all know her "last dude" was Lance, so what is it??? Lol! We know this is nonsensical drama but hey, it's a slow news day.

Lance also posted a doozy today in the form of the pic above. We took this as, "take that, Eva", but again, who are we???

TWITTER STAR OF THE WEEK: ACTRESS JURNEE SMOLLETT

Why??? Because she's fantabulous! If you don't know her work, look her up: "Eve's Bayou", was her on screen debut (way back in the day), and "The Debaters" was her most recent alongside Denzel(awesome flick, btw). We follow her on Twitter (and we're pretty sure it's really her) and though she's not a big Tweeter, she's doing great things. Like what, you ask? Well, like "still writing a speech for Oprah's Academy visit today", and "getting ready to leave for a dinner I'm guest of honor at...The Conul General is hosting me" and "reading report on young men and the construction of masculinity n sub saharan africa". Though these were things she listed that she was supposed to be doing instead of Twittering, we're sure she got them all handled proper-like. Bottom line: We looovvve Herrrrr!

TWITTER UPDATE

Hey Peeps! As an update to a previous Twitter post, we have found the true stats on the company. AND, You Tube has gone TwitterNuts like the rest of the globe and has added a Twitter button to their share links. Just and FYI for all of you Tweet-Happy Twitterers... and eggheads like moi. :D Also, there is an article in today's NY Times, which discusses how may celebrity twitterers are actually using ghost twitterers, but we could have guessed that. Twitter, founded by Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams in March 2006 (launched publicly in July 2006), is a social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to post their latest updates. An update is limited by 140 characters and can be posted through three methods: web form, text message, or instant message. The company has been busy adding features to the product like Gmail import and search. They recently launched a new site section called “Explore” for external and third party tools that interact with Twitter and a new visualization tool called Twitter Blocks. The service was started by Obvious Corp, who also started Odeo. In April 2008 Twitter launched Twitter Japan in partnership with Digital Garage.

Twitter Is Taking Over!

Twitter-fever has hit the globe in a big way. I logged on about a week ago and it since been what I wake and up go to bed with (no comments from the peanut gallery!). It's referred to as a "microblogging" social-networking site but I call it tech-crack. Because it's real time, it's more fascinating to me than say Facebook. I have followers from as far away as Finland and it's awesome. I have been trying to get the history but have so far only found that it's been in motion since at least 2006. It has since blown up and it doesn't look like it will slow down anytime soon. Celebrities are obsessed too. Admittedly, there are some posers (Christian M. Bale? um. sure. And, I'm questioning Leo DeCaprio) but you can generally tell the authentic celebs (Paris Hilton, Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore, John Mayer...) by their "updates". If you're are into the Hip Hop community and culture they are onboard too (I'm following Rev Run (with his words of wisdom), Xzibit, stylist June Ambrose (forever sending fashion updates), journalist dream hampton, rapper Jean Grae and Diddy is forever-tweeting...so is Tyrese). Twitterville is an adventure and the Celebrity Tweets are fun to follow, even if they don't answer your replies :-/ There sooo much to get into with this. My suggestion is for you to login and find out for yourself. Especially, if you are a narcissist and/or have a product to market...Twitter a PR dream.

Lindsay's Tweets are Koo-Koo?

Lindsay Lohan. *sigh* Young, beautiful, talented, so fucked up. The latest is that a warrent was issued for her arrest and she's going to court on Monday (tomorrow) to clear it all up. What.ever. I just thought the fact that her insanity is being validated by a stream of Tweet messages from her Twitter account. This is why Twitter rocks. It's real time and addictive. If it catches you during a vulnerable moment, or day, or week, you'll blast out some crazy shit to people you don't even know. You feel like you do, but you don't. That's the magic of Twitter. The good thing is you can delete your messages whenever it serves you. But, apparently, deleting them just ain't enough.
