CITY OF NY WILL PAY OUT MILLIONS TO THE ESTATE OF SEAN BELL....

The City of NY will pay out $3.25 million dollars to the Estate of Sean Bell in settlement of a civil suit. For the clueless, Bell was murdered by undercover police in a hail of 50 bullets in 2006 outside of a strip club in Queens, which sparked outrage in NY and around the nation. Total payout from the City of NY is $7 million, as two of Bell's two friends, Joseph Guzman and Trent Benefield, were critically wounded in the shooting and will also receive monetary compensation. In a nutshell: The 3 men, Bell, Guzman, Benefield were in the parking lot of the strip club after celebrating Bell's bachelor party (the night before his wedding) when the undercover officers, there investigating reports of prostitution, "misheard the men" during an altercation with them and thought one of them had a gun-- the rest is history. Interestingly enough, no gun was found. As a condition of the settlement payout, the police department admits no wrongdoing. The officers involved in the shooting were acquitted of criminal charges in 2008. Is this justice? [CNN]

NEW OIL LEAK IN THE GULF BEING REPORTED, UNRELATED TO BP...(MAYBE)

Huff Post is reporting a leaking well north of the BP leak in the Gulf. Apparently, a tow boat hit the well head and now oil is spewing. A sheen of oil is already visible but as of yet, no one knows just how much oil is leaked, or even who owns the well.  Officials are keeping watch via helicopter until the well can be reached by boat to investigate further. Why does it seem like someone has it out for our oceans and sea life? WTF?
Sidebar:  BP CEO, Tony Hayward is out and his American replacement, Bob Dudley, is in. Too little too late? But don't feel bad for Hayward, he won't be in the unemployment line anytime soon. Word is, he'll be heading up a company subdivision over at BP Russia.

LINDSAY LOHAN'S HAIR EXTENSION CONTROVERSY...

Apparently, the general rule for female inmates entering a jail facility is that they remove their hair extensions. Well, word is that this rule did not apply to Lindsay Lohan, and her haters  observers are crying "foul". Lynwood Correctional officials have stated that Lindsay is not receiving special treatment while locked up, despite the rumblings. It was also stated that this rule only applies to inmates who's weaves are easily removed, and Lohan's are sewn in too close to the scalp for them to strip 'em off.  Anyone heard of scissors? DMX was ordered to do another 90 days in connection with that 2002 reckless driving conviction. He surrendered himself to authorities yesterday. No word on how much time he'll actually serve. President Barack Obama is scheduled to sit with the ladies of "The View" on Wednesday (to air on Thursday), which will be "the first time in history that a sitting U.S. President appears on a daytime talk show", according to ABC. Though Barbara is still out after undergoing heart valve replacement surgery in May, we're sure the other hosts will not disappoint. HOLLYWOOD STUDIO CONTRACT APPROVED BY TEAMSTERS, STRIKE AVERTED...

The Teamsters, representing Local Union 399's Hollywood Studio transportation workers, held a vote on Sunday on whether to approve the newly ratified contracts, or to strike until they received the contract upgrades they requested from The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents the studios. Teamsters and the AMPTP met on Friday night and Teamsters rejected the contract, but the AMPTP came back Saturday with a few enhancements on what they claimed to be a final offer, which was accepted by vote on Sunday. Yup, the standing room only crowd of studio drivers and transportation workers approved the newly ratified contracts by an overwhelming 97%.  

MAN STABBED IN EYE WITH A PEN AT COMIC-CON...

A man was stabbed in the eye with a pen at Comic-Con, the world's largest comic book and popular arts convention, on Saturday. Ouch!! It happened in Hall H just before Universal Pictures presented panels on two upcoming films-- a sci-fi adventure, Paul, and John Favreau's Cowboys & Aliens. The two men, said to be in their mid-20's, scuffled over a choice center-seat before the stabbing occurred. The fighting was stopped by other audience members and one of them held the assailant down until the authorities arrived. Obviously these sci-fi fans take their ish seriously. So, next time you see a nerd with a pocket protector full of pens, don't make fun of them. You just might get stabbed! [USA Today]

WOMEN: STUDY SAYS SITTING FOR LONG PERIODS INCREASES CHANCES OF DYING EARLY...

We came across this story and couldn't pass up sharing. According to a study published by the American Cancer Society, women who sit for more than 6 hours per day increase their mortality rate by 37%, "even if they chain themselves to their treadmills", which is a significant difference to that of men at 17%.  For women who do not exercise (opposite of those surveyed) increase their death rate by 94%. We've got the "how" so the question is "why"?
