According to latimes.com, today's May Day Immigration Rally brought around 60,000 protesters to Downtown L.A.. Though said to be the largest in nation's history, it was only half of the number police expected. An annual May 1st event celebrating worker's rights, this year's rally was dedicated to Arizona's new law, which forces police to question immigration status of anyone suspected of being an illegal immigrant. They may also detain those suspects who are unable to provide documentation to prove their citizenship status. The law is said to be a green light for racial profiling and people are pissed about it. As mentioned in a previous post, this is going to be a long, hard fight. We'll keep you posted on it.

I disagree with racial profiling but I sympathize with the plight of Arizona.
ReplyDeleteArizona is not the only state dealing with this issue. Seems the law would only really be effective if other states being "invaded" also adopted it. It's a problem because suspecting a person will give to much power to the officers. Anyone of color...or with an accent is in danger of being racially profiled and possible detained if their paperwork is not on them, or in order. It will be interesting to see what happens.
