LA WATCH: SERIAL KILLER DUBBED "THE GRIM SLEEPER" CAUGHT THANKS TO SON'S DNA & A SLICE OF PIZZA...(VIDEO)

Lonnie David Franklin, Jr., 57, (a black man!) who has eluded police for two decades, was arrested yesterday and charged with 10 counts of murder, and 1 count of attempted murder for the assault of the only victim known to have survive. He was dubbed "the Grim Sleeper" by L.A. Weekly when he resumed his murderous activities (mostly of prostitutes in South L.A.) in 2003 after a 13 year hiatus.

His DNA was used when conducting prison sweeps, which produced nothing until last Wednesday when a "familial search" turned up the Grim Sleeper's own son. An undercover unit went to the house to investigate further. Ultimately, a discarded slice of pizza at a pizza place led to the suspect's arrest.

Neighbors expressed shock that their neighborhood mechanic was fingered as the killer, one even called  him a "very good man".  A woman interviewed on the local news said he once picked her up (which her husband arranged) and gave her a ride home after her car had broken down. "I had no idea I was riding in the car with The Grim Sleeper," she said-- eyes bulging.  Mm-- Just goes to show you really don't know people. You be safe out there! [L.A. Times]

  2. Ewww! @ the KY comment! Yea, that National DNA bank is gonna be the catalysts for many more arrests. It has a "familial" search for searching family members too, which will broaden a lot diff types of searches, not just rape and murder suspects. Interesting stuff.
