WYCLEF FOR PRESIDENT? CITIZENSHIP STATUS MAY BE A CHALLENGE...(VIDEO)

Yup! Former Fugee and Haiti relief-rescue extraordinaire has decided it's time for him to run for president of his native home-base. "I'm being drafted by the youth," Jean said in an interview with Time on Tuesday.

Whether or not that's the case, its said to become an inter-family election battle if his run indeed happens. Word is, Clef's uncle, a former Hatian Ambassador, is up for the seat. But despite the seniority, the youth loves Clef. He was appointed Ambssadar-At-Large in 2007 largely due to his strong following and influence. And, he has people with political influence behind him too. One of his main backers even being hailed as "a Newt Gingrich" type.

Per Jean, "If I can't take five years out to serve my country as President, then everything I've been singing about, like equal rights, doesn't mean anything".  The Hip Hop Star-slash-Refugee Spokesperson says he originally planned to run ten years from now but [because of the devastation caused by the historical 7.0 quake on January 12th] there's no time like the present.

Well, he sounds gung-ho, but he may not be able to pass "go" if the rules are to apply. According to the video, there are some "pending issues" surrounding the officialdom of his much hyped decision. Apparently there are 9 mandates required for candidacy, and one of them (that he mentioned), having to do with citizenship/residency status, he's having a little trouble with. He says he is a dual citizen, as he never renounced his Haitian citizenship after moving to Brooklyn, NY with his family when he was 9. They later to New Jersey where he was raised. Thankfully! Life in the 90's without the Fugees would not have been the same!

“They’re about to attack me in the next two weeks.... They think they’re going to get me with the dual citizenship thing. But I have a Haitian passport with a green card."

He must announce his candidacy before the August 7th deadline. The election takes place November 28th. (A moment of silence, please!) Like he and his Fugee fam said in "The Score": Ready or Not. Watch his interview with Time below. And, hey-- thanks for hanging! :)
